Thailand and Laos are gearing up to launch their inaugural railway service between Bangkok and Vientiane, with trial runs scheduled for 13-14 July 2024, as announced by Thailand’s Ministry of Transport.
The new route will originate from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Apiwat Central Terminal, pass through Udon Thani and Nong Khai provinces, and culminate at Vientiane’s Khamsavath station.
Ekkarach Sriarayanpong, Chief of the SRT Governor’s Office, revealed that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has been collaborating with the Lao National Railway to ensure the successful initiation of this service. Their discussions have focused on four key areas:
- Plans for launching the service, including the upcoming trial runs.
- Strategies for developing the tourism market.
- Initiatives for advertising and public relations.
- Enhancing freight transport capabilities between Thailand, Laos, and China.
On May 21, the SRT and Lao National Railway successfully conducted trials and tests between Udon Thani Station, Nong Khai Station, Thanalaeng Station, and Vientiane Station, encountering no operational issues.
This railway project, a collaborative effort between the State Railway of Thailand and the Lao National Railways, aims to bolster tourism and freight transport between the two nations and improve connectivity with China.
