Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s crown jewel and one of the most iconic landmarks in Southeast Asia, becomes even more breathtaking when experienced at dawn. Watching the sunrise over this ancient temple is one of those rare, unforgettable travel experiences that leave visitors in awe of its beauty, history, and spiritual significance.
The main reason travelers wake up in the early hours to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat is the sheer majesty of the scene. As the first light of day breaks over the horizon, it illuminates the towering spires of the temple, creating a reflection in the lotus-filled pond that sits in front of it. The contrast of the dark temple silhouette against the changing colors of the sky, from deep purples and blues to fiery reds and oranges, is simply mesmerizing.
It’s not just about the visual spectacle. There’s a sense of serenity and wonder as the morning light slowly reveals the sprawling temple complex, offering a quiet, almost spiritual start to the day.
To get the most out of your sunrise experience, you need to rise early. Most travelers leave their hotels between 4:30 and 5:00 AM to make the 15–30-minute tuk-tuk or taxi journey to Angkor Wat from Siem Reap. The sunrise usually begins around 5:30 to 6:00 AM, depending on the time of year. It’s best to purchase your Angkor Pass the day before to avoid queuing in the dark early morning hours. The pass office opens at 5:00 AM, but pre-purchasing gives you more time to find a good spot for the sunrise (for all our guests, our professional guide will arrange this for you). There are two main reflecting ponds in front of Angkor Wat, and most visitors gather on the western side, which is considered the prime spot for photographs. The northern pond (left side when facing the temple) is often less crowded but still offers a stunning view. If you prefer a quieter experience, arriving earlier will help you find a peaceful place, even if it means sacrificing the absolute best angle.
Once the sun is up, many visitors retreat for breakfast or continue their exploration of the Angkor Wat complex. If you can, stay and take advantage of the early morning light to explore the interior of the temple. It’s usually less crowded than later in the day, allowing you to appreciate the intricate bas-reliefs, towers, and long corridors in peace.
