You will need to provide two passport-sized photos, which can be purchased at the airport for US$3 each. Additionally, all visitors must have a passport with a validity of at least six months after their arrival date. All nationalities are eligible for a visa on arrival at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap-Angkor international airports without prior registration. This arrival visa grants a 30-day validity period. To obtain a visa on arrival to Cambodia, visit the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/.

Starting from July 1, 2024, the electronic platform within the app will substitute the conventional immigration, customs, and health forms. Travelers have the option to experiment with the CeA app until June 30, 2024, after which it will become a compulsory requirement. There are two international airports in Cambodia: Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI), which replaced the old Siem Reap International Airport (REP) in October 2023. Both airports serve as hubs for flights from neighboring Asian countries, although the airlines flying the route often change. For travelers flying from America, Australia, or Europe, it is advisable to book flights to Bangkok, Singapore, Malaysia and then connect to Cambodia via these major airport hubs.
Distance from airports to city centre:
–        From Phnom Penh International Airport to centre: Approximately 10 km.

Given Cambodia’s tropical climate, it is advisable to opt for light cotton clothing to ensure comfort throughout the day. It’s recommended to cover your arms and legs to protect yourself from mosquito bites and the hot sun in the afternoon. Carrying an umbrella is ideal for both hot and rainy seasons, offering protection from intense sunlight and rain. All visitors must strictly adhere to a dress code when entering sacred temples and palaces. Sleeveless shirts, sportswear, leggings, shorts, short skirts, three-quarter length pants, flip flops/sandals without heel straps, swimsuits, beachwear, and clothing bearing offensive imagery or text are strictly prohibited. Visitors may be refused entry to Angkor Temples, Pagodas, and other sacred places if they fail to comply with these strict dress standards.

Bring small notes for services such as tuk-tuks, taxis, and tips, as many times when paying with US Dollars, you might receive change in Riels.

Cambodian cuisine is typically robust in herbal seasoning rather than intense spiciness, distinguishing it from Thai or Lao cuisines. Fish and rice are the main cornerstones of Cambodian cuisine, thanks to the country’s extensive river network, including the Tonle Sap Lake (the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia), and the renowned coastline rich with shrimp and crabs. A typical Cambodian meal comprises three or four dishes, balancing flavors of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Some famous Cambodian dishes include “Fish Amok,” a signature dish traditionally cooked with fish and coconut milk steamed in a banana leaf, and “Samlor Korkor,” a famous traditional soup rich in flavors and nutrition from various ingredients such as vegetables, herbs, unripe papaya, banana, pumpkin, long bean, eggplant, turmeric, moringa, and kaffir lime leaves. Cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville draw a diverse crowd of Western and Asian visitors, resulting in a variety of international cuisine available at major tourist spots, including American fast food, Italian pizzas and pasta, British fish and chips, German meat dishes, Japanese sushi, and Thai specialties.

In Cambodia, the standard voltage is 230 Volts at a frequency of 50Hz. The power outlets utilize a mixture of two flat, two round, or three-prong plugs (Type A, Type C, and Type G). Travelers should secure comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses and evacuation costs. Navigating around big cities, particularly in the tourist hubs of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, is convenient. Various modes of transportation are accessible in these cities, including tuk-tuks (locally known as “remorks” – motorcycles with attached cabins). It is advisable to confirm the fare before the journey begins. Recently, you can book tuk-tuk or cars through transportation apps like PassApp or Grab. As WhatsApp is widely used in Cambodia, it is a good idea to have contact with the local driver as a backup plan.

Despite its turbulent past, Cambodia is a generally safe destination for travelers. However, as there may be minor bag theft in certain tourist areas, it is advisable to exercise caution when riding motorcycles or tuk-tuks, as bags can be easily snatched from the front baskets. We recommend considering using hotel safe deposit boxes to safeguard your valuable belongings during your stay.

Tipping is not mandatory in Vietnam, but it is appreciated as a gesture of good service. Luggage handlers at hotels and stations should also be given a small amount to appreciate their assistance. When tipping guides during tour excursions, it’s customary to consider the quality of service provided.
Suggested tips:
– For tour guides:
  • Group of 2–6 people: US$ 5 per person per day
  • Group of 7–14 people: US$ 4 per person per day
  • Group of 15 or more: US$ 3 per person per day
– For drivers:
  • Group of 2–6 people: US$ 2.5 per person per day
  • Group of 7–14 people: US$ 2 per person per day
  • Group of 15 or more: US$ 1.5 per person per day
For local porters who support you in carrying heavy luggage during hard trekking: US$ 5 per person per day
For hotel porters: US$ 1 per piece of luggage
For restaurants: 10–15% of the bill (if the service charge is not included)
For boat trips: US$ 2 per person
Tipping etiquette is an art, and you have flexibility in choosing the currency for gratuities. Whether it’s local currency, USD, or Euro, please exercise caution to avoid any misunderstandings regarding the value of the local currency. For example, in Vietnam, 1 USD is equivalent to 25,000 VND. When giving gratuities, be mindful of the three zeros to avoid accidentally tipping 1,000 VND, 2,000 VND, or 5,000 VND (which in USD is worth less than 20 cents) for a single service.
